In The Beginning

HOW IT ALL STARTED

I stood frozen in the doorway of my uncle’s chiropractic office, watching something I had never seen before in a doctor’s office—people were actually excited to be there.

No one was impatiently checking their watch. No kids were crying in the waiting room. Instead, patients were smiling, laughing, chatting like they were meeting an old friend. I had been in plenty of doctor’s offices before. Those places were sterile, cold, filled with people who didn’t want to be there—just sick, tired, and waiting to be called.

But this?

This was different.

And it wasn’t just the energy of the place. It was the way my uncle carried himself, the way patients trusted him. The way they needed him. I watched them walk in stiff, limping, exhausted. And then, after a few minutes of adjustments, they walked out taller, lighter, like a weight had been lifted from their shoulders.

I didn’t know it at the time, but that moment changed everything for me. I had always been drawn to science. In high school, biology was my passion. In college, I majored in it.

I knew I wanted to help people, but there was just one problem—I couldn’t stand the sight of blood. That ruled out medicine and surgery, but when I saw my uncle at work, I realized something, this was it.

This was what I had been looking for. And then, my uncle took me to a chiropractic seminar in New Jersey. I had no idea what to expect, but then Jim Sigafoose stepped onto the stage. His voice boomed through the room as he said something that sent chills down my spine.

“The power that created the body heals the body.” I leaned forward in my seat.

“Healing happens from the inside out, not the outside in.”

That sentence hit me like a freight train. I had never seen someone so fired up about what they did. This wasn’t some scripted speech—it was a mission. I could feel his conviction. And the more I listened, the more I realized something…He was right.

No one gets this passionate about something unless it works. Unless it changes lives. Unless it’s real. That was the moment I knew chiropractic wasn’t just something interesting. It was something I had to do.

Before I even started chiropractic school, my uncle told me, “Go to Life University in Atlanta. That’s where you need to be.” I trusted him. I visited the campus. And the second I stepped foot on the grounds, I felt it. This was where I was supposed to be. Fast forward nearly 30 years, and I’ve helped thousands of people.

But one story still shakes me to my core.

I was giving a talk at a manufacturing plant about proper lifting techniques when a man approached me after.

His face was tight with worry. “My wife…” He hesitated. “She’s in bad shape. No doctors have been able to help her. I don’t know what to do.” I could hear the desperation in his voice. I told him, “I can’t make promises, but chiropractic helps the body function at its best. When there’s good nerve flow, the body has a chance to heal itself.

Bring her in. Let’s see what happens."

The next day, she rolled into my office in a wheelchair.

She could barely walk. Could barely speak. Her words were so garbled that her husband had to translate for her.

She was frustrated. Angry. Hurt.

Every doctor she had seen before had brushed her off. They told her her symptoms weren’t real. That she was making them up. That nothing was wrong with her.

I told her the truth. “Most doctors don’t do what I do. I focus on the nervous system—making sure there’s no interference between the brain and the body. When your nervous system is clear, your body has the best chance to heal on its own.

”She agreed to start care.

Two weeks later, my phone rang.

“Hi, Dr. Brent.” I frowned. I didn’t recognize the voice. “Sorry, who’s this?” The woman on the line laughed.

“It’s Penny.” My stomach dropped.

The last time I saw Penny, she could barely speak. And now, she was talking to me like nothing had ever been wrong.

Then she said something that made my heart pound.

“I have a surprise for you at my next appointment.”

The next day, the front door to my office swung open… and there she was.

Walking.

Not in a wheelchair. Not being carried. Walking. With just a cane.

I stared at her, my throat tight, my chest heavy.

A few weeks earlier, she had been trapped in a body that wouldn’t move, a voice that wouldn’t speak. And now, here she was, smiling at me.

That was the moment I knew—no matter what anyone else says, no matter what traditional medicine believes—this works. And it wasn’t just Penny.

I had a patient come to me after multiple spinal fusions, living in constant pain. He told me he had given up his passion—restoring antique cars—because he just couldn’t do it anymore. I told him, “Even though you’ve had surgery, there’s still nerve flow around the fusion. If we can optimize it, your body will move and feel better.”

A few weeks later, he walked into my office, his face lit up.“ Dr. Brent,” he said, “I can finally work on my cars again—without pain.”

That’s what chiropractic is about.

It’s not just about feeling better. It’s about getting your life back.

Every single day, I see people suffering from things they don’t have to suffer from—back pain, migraines, chronic tension from years of sitting at a desk. They pop painkillers, go for injections, get told surgery is their only option. But it’s not.

One of my patients, a woman who spent hours at a desk every day, told me, “I can’t focus at work anymore. My pain is constant.”

We started adjusting her, restoring her range of motion, improving her nerve function. A few weeks later, she looked at me and said, “I don’t need painkillers anymore.” That’s the power of chiropractic.

Most people have been conditioned to believe that medication is the only solution. That they have to mask their pain instead of fixing the root cause.

But that’s not true.

Most people don’t know what it feels like to have their bodies working at full capacity.

But once they experience it?

They say, “I never knew this was possible.” That’s what drives me. That’s why I do this. Because I know—when the body is functioning properly, when the nervous system is clear, when the body is aligned—it heals itself.

And when that happens?

People get their lives back.
